Updates on Ryan

Ryan has not been attending school for a while now. He will go back to school after the Hari Raya / National Day holidays next week, so he has one more week of lounging about in the morning. He has been pretty busy these past six weeks. Here's a rundown of what he's been up to.

We kicked off his break with a short trip to KL. It was mainly to escape from the suffocating haze in Singapore at that time. Ryan had a ball of a time with his cousins and spent some time with my mother who was visiting from Australia.

When we got back, Ryan participated in two programmes conducted in Chinese at his pre-school. The first programme was an investigation into sound, and the second one was an investigation into movement. These were separate from the usual school programme so he got a different set of teachers. He also got a (mostly) different set of classmates - his group consisted of children from the Nursery 2 and the kindergarten classes. Only a few of the school children signed up for this programme, so his class was quite small. Each programme lasted two weeks and they were conducted back-to-back.

One day, when Richard was picking him up from the school, one of the English teachers asked whether Ryan attends another pre-school (in addition to the one he is at). Richard's reaction was - Huh? She explained that she noticed that Ryan can read and Ryan's Nursery 2 class doesn't teach reading at the level that Ryan is at. Richard explained that we taught him at home. Heh heh. We will soon reach the point when Ryan's ability to read is just a basic skill but for now, it is a superpower.

A couple of days later, and again when Richard was picking Ryan up, one of the Mandarin teachers asked, where did Ryan learn Hanyu Pinyin. Again, Richard went, huh? She said that she showed the students the flag of the USA with the Mandarin characters for USA and the Hanyu Pinyin for USA, and Ryan could read the Hanyu Pinyin. Richard said, we taught him phonics at home. To which she said, nope, this is more than that because he used the correct intonation. She was very insistent that he could read the Hanyu Pinyin. This one stumped us, because we have not taught him the Chinese words for USA, and we have not taught him Hanyu Pinyin. Some investigation is needed here!

Home learning at night has been a little sporadic because it depends on how tough a day he's had. I do try to build in more writing activities when we do stuff at home. In relation to Shichida activities, after Ryan's Makoto Club showcase and over this hectic period, we stopped giving him Shichida activities at home. We will pick the routine up again this weekend, because he has to do poem recitation and linking memory recitation in class on Sunday.

Also during this break from school, on 6 July 2013, Ryan made his violin debut at Yong Siew Toh Conservatory. It was a fabulous way to conclude his one year of violin. He performed splendidly.

The experience of preparing for the concert was a lesson for me. Ordinarily, we would be quite casual about Ryan's violin practice at home. Leading up to the concert however, we knew that he was not prepared and so we spent about a week practising seriously. As mentioned previously, I went hard on him a few times - two times, actually. Believe me, I knew. Even as I lost it, I knew I was being a monster. Ryan was an absolute angel - he bore my wrath and my impatience with no illwill and he soldiered on. We managed to end every practice session with some measure of progress only because he was patient with me. Each time I hurt him with my words, with my expressions, he forgave me. And my heart would break into a million pieces, my little man loves me that much. What an idiot I am, who's the adult here. I promised him, and myself, that I would be better, and I am determined to be.

So, Ryan has graduated from his one-year Suzuki violin group programme. The next step is to sign him up for individual lessons at the school. We haven't done that yet, for a few reasons. First, we are weighing a few options in terms of classes. I mentioned previously, that we are considering martial arts classes for Ryan. Also, Ryan has been asking to try out the piano, so we will look into that. The second reason is that he started his catwalk course last Saturday, which will go on for six lessons over six weeks. So we will let him complete that before we commit him to something else. Third reason is that we are considering getting a tutor from elsewhere, because the tutors at his school have limited availability. Anyone has a good piano/violin tutor to recommend?

Ryan has been pretty busy with auditions, castings, and shoots. In fact, he just had a shoot today for a print ad. As per his last job, he played the role of the brother in a family of four. The mother was Korean, the father was Chinese, the sister was Thai-Chinese, and everyone assumed Ryan was Japanese. Somehow, they looked like a family.

Over the past six weeks that Ryan has been out of school and up to his own stuff, he has been so busy that we didn't manage to meet up with his friends. There were a few days here and there when we tried to set something up but were unsuccessful. He has a lot of social interaction when he is on his modelling assignments, but he does miss his friends. Nevertheless, his guardian angel is always looking out for him - we bumped into his good pal Brayden twice! The first time was in Ngee Ann City and the second was when Brayden tracked us down at Pappa at River Valley Road.

Anyway, a funny story to share - yesterday evening, Ryan went for a wardrobe fitting for a shoot. Richard fetched him from his nanny and took him to the studio. After they were done there, they went to fetch Rachel. By that time, it was already about 8.30 pm and Ryan hadn't eaten anything since lunch. He didn't complain at all throughout and just followed Richard while Richard hustled and bustled about. When everyone finally settled down in the car, Ryan placed his hand on Richard's lap and looked him in the eye. "Look," he said calmly and seriously, which got Richard's full attention. "Let's go and get fries and nuggets."

That boy knows what's important.

We balance out Ryan's busy days with a lot of "nothing days" - when he has the whole day to do absolutely nothing. Ironically, it is these days when he doesn't want to rest. He's bored and wants to get something going so he keeps himself awake in order not to miss anything. His nanny's daughter, Caroline, takes him out to town some days. They went to see a movie (Monsters University) recently and she's been trying to persuade him to watch the one with the minions. Other times, they just walk around and enjoy the sights.

Ok, that's all. Quite a long post huh? This boy has been busy!

Ryan's violin debut

We have been very busy the past few days - lots to do and not enough time. My perpetual predicament.

Mainly, we have been trying to restore some semblance of sanity to our home. The lights have been replaced, the fibre broadband is up and running, and yesterday Richard put up the bike bar. Yes, he bought a bicycle. It is quite a beauty and it wasn't a cheap purchase so we decided to give it some respect and a proper space in the home. To make space for it, we had to move a bookcase into the playroom, which is still a disaster zone. Good timing because I haven't got around to organising the playroom yet so at least I don't have to change anything!

Of course, the main highlight of the weekend was Ryan's violin debut at Yong Siew Toh Conservatory! He played in a group with his three classmates and this was their repertoire - Pop Goes The Weasel, Rhythm on E, Rhythm on E and A, E String Concerto, Twinkle with stops, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and Lightly Row. He did a marvellous job and we are so proud of him!

Ryan practised very hard for the performance. He did require a little bit of firmness during practise sessions sometimes and my aim is to be firm in a gentle way. Sad to say, I did go "Tiger Mom" on him a few times. I apologised to him for that, and hopefully I'll rein myself in next time otherwise it will just cause both of us misery.

His group kicked off the programme, as in, they were the first to perform. We stayed back to watch the subsequent performances, both violin and piano. All very impressive. A couple of my colleagues had children performing too - I didn't know until we bumped into each other at the rehearsal in the morning!

As Ryan and I sat in the audience, Ryan started telling me that he wanted to play the piano! I said he'd have to learn and he'd have to practise - and he said ok. So, I'll teach him a little at home and see how it goes.

On a side note - do you like his outfit? I think he looks so dapper and smart! The white shirt, vest and bow tie are from Kiddy Palace. They come in a set with black pants, but they only had size 3 (for 3 year olds). Everything fit except the pants were a little short. I initially thought that I would re-hem the pants but then decided that I would sew a whole new pair instead! So that's what he's wearing - mama's handmade pants! Not too shabby, not too shabby.

Updates on Ryan

The fibre-optic internet connection at our house is still down, which puts me off blogging a little. I can use my mobile devices (phone, iPad) but there are some limitations. There are people coming over to try to get the connection up and running again tomorrow, so fingers crossed, things will be back to normal soon.

In the meantime, here're some updates on Ryan. Here's a photo of him when he went to watch a movie with Caroline. It was his first time watching a movie in a cinema. He has watched quite a number of short movies in theme parks and he has sat through many stage performances, but I believe this was his first real cinema movie experience, complete with popcorn. They watched Monsters University. Back home, when I asked him about the outing, he didn't have anything to say about the movie. He just said that he ate popcorn, hahaha!

Ryan will be participating in his music school's concert this Saturday, playing violin with his classmates in a group. We are practising hard this week, trying to make up for all the hours lost when we were travelling. I have to confess that he is not enjoying our practice sessions much - which is my fault of course. I need to remind myself to make our sessions more pleasant and attractive!

Ryan has finally breached the 15 kg mark in weight. I think he's also grown taller in recent months, although I haven't measured him. He does look slimmer, so I think he's surely taller since he's heavier. Does that make sense?

We are not doing much structured activities at home at the moment. There is a bit of upheaval in the home environment, what with all the fixing-up and all the tidying up going on. I have big plans for organising the playroom and that is high on my to-do list.

Here he is again. He needs a haircut, but our family always procrastinates when it comes to haircuts. Maybe we'll get it done in time for his violin recital this Saturday. Maybe not. We'll see. Yes, I taught him that two-finger victory sign. Yes, I am a little embarrassed about it.

Here it is again! On the other hand!

Ryan finished off a term at Shichida yesterday. It was an emotional class because his sensei is leaving the school and yesterday was her last day. Teacher Hirin has been so wonderful with Ryan and so supportive - she was the one who nominated Ryan as a candidate for Makoto Club. Ryan loves her. Richard brought him for class and he said that Ryan sat with his back facing his sensei for half the class, refusing to participate! I did tell Ryan that he wouldn't be able to see his sensei anymore after the class, so I think it was his way of dealing with the bad news.

I couldn't make it for the class because I attended Serene's party for her daughter, Zelyn. It was her 1st birthday, so it was quite an important day for her. The party was sweet and simple, and I managed to catch up with some of the mummies whom I hadn't met for some time.

Ryan is doing a two-week Mandarin programme at the moment. It's not a language programme though, it's just conducted in Mandarin. He seems to be enjoying it. It's funny to watch him interacting with Mandarin speakers - it's a side of him which I have no clue about. A strange feeling for me.

Ok, that's it for now. Will be back tomorrow.

Weekend update

We had a little variety in our routine last weekend because Richard had to take a meeting on Saturday, which clashed with Ryan's violin class and Rachel's Heguru class. We contemplated skipping both classes but I decided to bring Rachel to Ryan's violin class so that we could at least go for that. I was not sure how it would work if I brought Ryan to Heguru, so I decided to skip Heguru. As it turned out, Ophelia graciously invited us to her place for her newborn's first month party on Saturday, which meant no Heguru class in any event! Heh heh! As I always say, things always fall into place somehow.

Photo time! Here's Ryan in violin class.

I think Ryan much prefers the guitar. Here he is at home rocking it out with a toy guitar.

The party at Ophelia's place was fun! I managed to catch up with many of the mummies whom I'd not spoken to in a while. It's interesting to see how we all make different choices in our parenting but still share common ups and downs.

Sunday was swimming day! We had breakfast at our usual prata joint, which just opened after renovations - service was slow that day and we were a little late for swimming.

Babydoll was her usual babydoll-self.

The rest of the day was spent on Shichida as well as some activities at home for Ryan.

Playground in the evening. Ryan loves this climbing apparatus and gets more daring everytime he plays on it.

We walked past this house on our way back from the playground and Ryan said it was a farm. He asked me where the farm animals were.

Ryan described this hole in the ground as a "burrow". To which I said, "That's right." He was introduced to the term in Shichida linking memory and it folded neatly into our weekly visit to the rabbit pen at St James Church Kindergarten after his swimming lesson. While we admire the rabbits, we talk about what the rabbits eat, what they do and where they sleep. Over the past few weeks, we've noticed the rabbits digging burrows. Two weeks ago, the rabbits were done and, when we couldn't spot them above ground, we had fun trying to guess whether the rabbits were sleeping in their burrows. Here, he was applying what we had been talking about so I didn't want to tell him that this was a smelly drain, and not a nice comfy burrow, and take the risk of killing his interest.

Last photo for the post - my little rascal on his wheels!

Weekend update

Ryan started his weekend with violin class. We were happy to hear from his teacher that he is doing really well. Half of his class are not able to catch on (or is it more than half? I'm not sure how many students are in his class) and one student has even dropped out. Either they are not ready or violin is not their thing. Ryan's teacher has identified three students whom he says can make it and Ryan is one of them. The next six weeks will be crucial though, as they will be moving on to tougher stuff.

Ryan finally got the chance to try out this painting thing. He has been asking for a go every time we pass the booth but we never had the time. We didn't really have the time again this time, but I decided, what the heck, so we made a stop and he was so excited and grinned non-stop. We were late for our next appointment but it was totally worth it.

On Saturday, Richard and I attended our 20th year junior college reunion. Everyone was recognisable.

Ryan tried out his new swimming suit on Sunday! I asked him to pose and this is what I got.

Shopping at Ngee Ann City to pass the time before Shichida class. Ryan spent a good few minutes lovingly caressing these letters outside the Candylicious shop.

After Shichida, we drove over to Changi Airport T3 for a satisfying meal at Gurney Drive. Ryan has been asking to go to the playground at Singkids so that's where we headed after that. These photos were taken en route at the Angry Birds set up. We stuck around for the show but I would advise you not to bother if you are there. No Angry Birds showed up, just a lot of dry ice and an astronaut on a pole.

Hope you had a good weekend!
