Updates on Ryan

Last month, we met up with Ryan's preschool teachers for a parent-teacher conference, to discuss his progress and things like that. He's doing great. The teachers said that he gets along with everyone; he's really easygoing and he is comfortable hanging out with anyone. He reads well, writes well. He likes to draw a lot. His Mandarin, including his Hanyu Pinyin, is good enough such that his Mandarin teacher assumed that we coached him at home (we don't).

In particular, the teachers mentioned a project in which Ryan took the lead. The children were discussing plans to make a charitable donation and they were deciding which charity to donate to. Ryan took the lead: helping to document and tally the votes, writing a letter to the school office to inform the office of the final choice, leading a group of classmates to the office to deliver the letter and explain its message and even using a camera to take photos of the whole thing. I thought that was quite impressive.

Ryan is doing golf as an extra-curricular school activity; something which I think he has a love-hate relationship with. According to the instructors, he is quite good, and when I talk to him about golf, he's happy and enthusiastic. On the other hand, whenever I remind him that he has a lesson, he will tell me that he doesn't want to go (too late though as I'd already paid for the term). I know that he enjoys himself during the lesson (I sit and watch him from the sidelines) so I was a little perplexed at his reluctance. Recently, I realised the reason - the golf lesson is conducted under the hot sun and I know that he really doesn't like being in the sun. When he actually goes for the lesson, he always has a good time and forgets about the heat, but when he's at home and we dissect it, he definitely remembers the discomfort!

Ryan is still taking swimming lessons once a week. Apart from golf and swimming, he doesn't do any classes. I have a feeling we won't do golf next term though! Haha!

Ryan's modelling/acting life is pretty busy. He had a casting call on Friday, followed by an audition on Monday (yesterday) and he has another casting call later this week. Keeping our fingers crossed that he'll be selected for one or more of the roles.

These photos were taken last Sunday at the beach near Parkland Green. We'd finished our meal and Ryan and I ventured out for a walk, while Richard minded babydoll who had fallen asleep. Ryan headed straight for the beach. I was surprised because I thought he wanted to ride his scooter along the path. What surprised me even more was how at ease he was with the sand and the surf, even taking off his shoes unprompted. When he was much younger, he was not a fan of the beach at all - he hated having sand between his toes and he was very uneasy with the surf. Now, he's a pro. I told Richard that it must be because of all the training he got when we went to Bali and to Mauritius!

Ok, that's all!

Life of a Model

Ryan spent two days last week on set for his latest project - a television commercial. That's one of his co-stars, Cana, who is supposed to be his sister in the commercial. They look alike, don't they? We are pretty excited about this project and are eagerly anticipating seeing it on air!

Interestingly, Ryan's screen daddy (Hoong) and screen mummy (Shu Qian) were the same actors who played his parents in a print commercial that he did about two years ago. What an unexpected reunion!

Another wholly unexpected encounter was when, Randall, the representative from the ad agency recognised Ryan as Ryan from this blog! It was a very happy moment for me, especially when he told me that he/his wife have been reading our blog for years and that he/his wife have found inspiration in our posts. That is amazingly awesome and I don't know what to say except thank you, thank you. I feel so grateful.

When I spoke to him, I had not posted for two weeks but our conversation inspired and motivated me to get back to blogging! Haha! There has been quite a lot happening in our household recently, which is why the blog has been on the backburner. I'll update you as we go along, yeah?

Life of a model

Have you been watching Channel 8? Ryan's latest project for MamaLemon started airing a few days ago! Have a look here!

If you're not familiar with Chinese, this is a trailer for a cooking programme sponsored by MamaLemon for Mother's Day. If you have a child who is 7 to 12 years old, sign up by 8 April 2014 and he/she can stand a chance to make a delicious gourmet meal for you under the guidance of celebrity chef Eric Teo and MediaCorp artiste Pornsak. Selected participants will also win $1,000 in cash and a $100 Lion gift set. You can also watch the trailer at the Lion website. There are some other promotional activities going on for Mother's Day as well, which you can read about on the website.

What do you think? He did a great job, yah? He is in all the scenes, save for the one where Pornsak is washing the dish, so he has the job of carrying the trailer and I think he did very well.

The shoot was done by MediaCorp. It took half a day and it went very smoothly, with minimum takes for each scene. Ryan had a lot of fun on the set and everyone had a smile for him.

Here are some photos from the shoot that day.

The trend of the day, inspired by Ellen DeGeneres at the Oscars - selfies!

Ryan's arm wasn't long enough to get everyone in his selfie, so I took the shot for them. These were the Lion people from Japan.

This is Chef Eric Teo. He was really good with Ryan. They struck up a good rapport.

This is Pornsak. He played a trick on Ryan - he was getting his hair and make up done and Ryan went up to him and asked him if he was Pornsak. He said "No, I'm James!" And so Ryan called him James for the rest of the day, even chiding me when I mentioned Pornsak, saying, No, that's James!

Some more photos with the clients.

These ladies from Lion absolutely adore Ryan. This is their third project with Ryan and everytime they meet they take lots of photos of him. Ryan was surrounded with so much love and positivity!

Heartfelt thanks to Lion and MamaLemon for having Ryan! He had such a happy shoot and loved every minute!

Life of a model

A quick post today about a party that Ryan attended last week. He's been attending so many birthday parties this month but this one was not a birthday party. It was a catwalk workshop for child models. I dropped him off at 10 am and he spent the day playing games, doing some art/craft, posing for photos, etc. The highlight of the party was, of course, the catwalk show performed by all the child models at the end of the day. All the parents were told to come at 5 pm to see the show.

It was such a great feeling to see Ryan walk out on to the catwalk and pose. Once he came out onto the stage, he scanned the audience and when he saw Richard and me, his grin was so wide! He was so happy to see us and he was really happy to show us what he could do.

I styled him for the party but only in terms of his outfit. His spiky hair with red highlights was done at the party. I think he looks like Dragonball, huh?

After the party, we took Ryan to Poulet at Great World City for an early dinner, before fetching babydoll from her nanny. Here he is - High 5!

Ryan enjoyed himself thoroughly and is very much looking forward to the next party!

Life of a model

Ryan and Pornsak reunited today for another TV commercial! The photo above is on Instagram @leftprofile (Pornsak's agent) and, as I'm writing this, it already has 99 likes at the original site! Pornsak also has another one going around on Instagram with Ryan - check it out here!

Today's shoot was another fun session for Ryan. He was much adored by everyone and had a fabulous time. Pornsak kept telling Ryan that he wasn't Pornsak, he was "James" and Ryan believed him, so it was a funny joke that lasted the whole shoot. We were on set from 1 pm till nearly 6 pm and Ryan was in all the scenes except one. The shoot went very smoothly, which was a testament to Ryan's experience and ease in front of the camera. I'll write more about the shoot when the commercial starts airing on TV.

In the morning, Ryan had a fitting for a catwalk show at Temasek Polytechnic School of Design. The show is in April and we are pretty excited about it because it will be Ryan's first catwalk show!

Here he was, on campus!

Attending the fitting was a very interesting experience! We went into the designers' studio space and it was full of the design students and their models in various stages of undress, everyone very busy with adjusting the garments, taking quick photos, and getting the right shoes. If you've ever watched Project Runway, it's very similar except that there were many more models and many more designers in the space.

There were mostly adult models there, and all of them were super tall, super leggy and super slim. Ryan caused quite a stir when he walked in. I guess, in a sea of tall and leggy models, you can still stand out simply because you're not tall and leggy, hahaha. All the girls started ooh-ing and aah-ing over him and going, "So cute! So cute!"

Some of the models were modelling really huge gowns (like wedding dresses) and they looked larger than life to me. I can only imagine what they must have looked like to my little son, especially in that little studio space - he actually reminded me to stay with him and not to go anywhere. He was a little uneasy with the unusual clothes that he was supposed to wear but I managed to convince him that it was a costume made for him, complete with little "mouse boots",  and that put him in a good mood. (Recently, he has been telling everyone that he is a little mouse.)

In other news, Rachel went for an audition today! Richard brought her for that, as I had to accompany Ryan. We are not hopeful about landing the job - it's still early days for Rachel and she's still learning. Nevertheless, according to Richard, she performed much better than Ryan did at his first audition - she at least let the photographer take the standard shots. I remember that Ryan wouldn't let me leave his side   and the photographer had a hard time keeping him in position because he kept following me off the set!

Anyway, it was a good day. Busy, interesting and fun.

Life of a model

Ryan appears in a fashion spread for this month's Motherhood magazine!

And we continue to see him in various supermarkets around town. Always a happy sight.

We are shooting a new television commercial tomorrow - will update!

Some sweetness for the weekend

This edition of "Some sweetness for the weekend" is brought to you by Dancing Ryan.

Ryan is working on a shoot today, which should be fun judging by the stuff that he was asked to do at the audition for this job. As usual, I'll update you all when the final cut is released.

Ryan was supposed to have a picnic with his classmates in school today but it looks like some sacrifices have to be made. Actually, not really. Ryan is very happy to be out of school. His nanny asked him if he was going to school tomorrow and he protested, "I'm on holiday!"

These shots were taken sometime last month at an audition for a different job. These are not the audition shots. I took these shots on my phone while we were waiting for the cameras to be set up. Ryan was fooling around, as he does when he's in a good mood. He has been to this place for casting three times, so he is quite familiar and comfortable with the place.

I've got loads more shots but most are blurry as he was moving and jumping around non-stop. As you can see, he's quite a dancer. I've asked him before if he wanted to take up a class, but he wasn't interested. I guess, when you got it, you got it.

In these shots, Ryan is wearing one of his mama-made T-shirts, which I made using the Recess Raglan Tee pattern by See Kate Sew. I've made this t-shirt five or more times now and I love it. Such a quick sew - I can get from first cut to final stitch in under an hour.

The shorts are from H&M and were bought by his nanny many years ago. They are size 12-18 months and Ryan wears them with the adjustable waistband buttoned to the smallest possible waist. Just goes to show how much space a baby's diaper takes up.

Weekend plans will hopefully involve putting up our Christmas tree and tidying up the house (we are expecting my uncle next week). Otherwise, things are looking like the usual.

Have a great weekend. See you back here on Monday.

Quick catch-up

Here's a quick photographic round-up of the last two weeks.

We split the kids up for bedtime and they are reunited in the morning when they are still asleep/semi-awake in bed. Normally the kids carry on sleeping while the adults get ready for work, although sometimes they wake up anyway and pull us from slumber. That's when we are greeted by two sunshine smiles. Love it.

Babydoll's hair is curly, curly, curly. I'm looking forward to seeing it go past her shoulders - I'm sure it will be gorgeous.

Babydoll has been expressing her fashion sense lately. See this photo below - Richard initially dressed her in this top and a pair of yellow pants. Babydoll went right back into her wardrobe and rummaged around until she found this plaid skirt. She brought it to us and asked to be changed into it. I do think the skirt looks much nicer as part of the outfit! This girl has a good fashion eye!

Since that time, I try to present her with options when I'm dressing her. She always, always chooses the more girly one. Like this dress (which was a gift from her Aunty Mary).

And this dress too. Girly right?

We spent an enjoyable evening with Alicia, Chris and Brayden two Sundays ago. They bought some black pepper crabs from Eng Seng for our dinner and we had lots of laughter playing board games. Ryan's strategy was completely absent but he somehow managed to win most of the games. Beginner's luck, I think!

Richard and I had a peaceful and satisfying dinner at Crab in da Bag at Big Splash. This was after our parent teacher conference at Ryan's preschool last week and before we went to fetch the kids from the nanny. It was our first time at this restaurant and it was good - we'll be back!.

I'll tell you more about the parent teacher conference in another post. For now, let's focus on the crab! This is the "before" photo.

And this is the "after" photo. As you may notice, we don't eat the crab roe so next time we'll ask for the male crab.

One of Ryan's friends had a birthday party last Saturday. It was a bowling and swimming party at the Chinese Swimming Club, with a spot of dancing in between. Ryan enjoyed himself so so so much. It was supposed to be "drop-off" so we stuck around for a short while to watch him bowl and then we went off for about an hour or so (for Rachel's Heguru and for me to go to the supermarket). Shortly after we left, Ryan called me (on the host's mobile phone) to tell me to come back! He was quite nervous without us and I think that most of the parents actually stayed on. The host assured me that he would be fine and that he just needed to hear my voice. They started up the dancing and singing segment right after that and, when we came back shortly after, the host told me that Ryan was so excited to sing and dance! Apparently, he confidently grabbed the microphone, put on some sunglasses and busted some moves! I asked him later what song he sang and he said "Gangnam Style"!

When we got back to the party, the kids were already in the pool. Ryan had a blast there! He was the absolute last person to leave the pool and only because he thought we were leaving without him (actually we were just walking back to the bowling area to find his shoes). It was a fabulous party - Happy 5th birthday to Leila!

On Sunday, we overslept and missed Rachel's Shichida class, while Ryan barely made it for swimming. For lunch, we visited the farmer's market at Pasarbella at The Grandstand. After a disappointing experience at the farmer's market at Dempsey, I was looking forward to much better offerings and this time, I was not disappointed. Worth the trip - do go if you can. We ate at Oceans of Seafood which is towards the back. It serves a wide Japanese seafood menu (the sashimi is supposedly very good) and a limited but good Western seafood menu (go for the fish and chips).

Last but not least, while we were shopping in the supermarket last Sunday, Rachel spotted this!

And yes, it was Rachel who spotted it before any of us did. She pointed to it and said "papa". Errr... she doesn't know how to say "Ryan" or "korkor" (big brother) yet, so we'll accept that! If you see Ryan's poster in Cold Storage, give it a secret wink, won't you?

That's all!
