Adjustments

Our week, and weekend, was a strange mix of getting back into our routine and, at the same time, saying goodbye to parts of it. That is actually a good representation of our life in general at the moment. It's a carousel of hellos and goodbyes right now, and "adjust" is the catchphrase of the day.

I am still missing my cat very much. Life at home without Tiger is significantly different and this has been an adjustment that I have not been willing to make. I have not touched his things at all - everything is exactly the way he left them.

Let me share some updates on the littles. Before we went on our trip to Mauritius, Ryan's swimming coach (at Tanglin Village) told me that Ryan could graduate to their big swimming pool at Turf City. I was really happy to hear that. Firstly of course, because Ryan is progressing in his swimming. Second is because, for the past couple of months, when Ryan was having his class in the small pool at Tanglin Village, there was another class being conducted at the same time in the pool. I felt it was a little noisy and distracting to have so many people in the small pool.

So Ryan attended his first class at Turf City last week. We asked for a weekday slot with the same coach. He swam so well in the big pool that his coach said he could join a more advanced class than the one she originally intended him to join. That was nice to hear!

Funny thing was that, when I asked him, Ryan said that he preferred the small pool because "this big pool takes too long to swim to the other end" and "I can't hold my breath long enough in the big pool" (referring to his back stroke breathing technique). Heh heh. I told him that it will get easier with a few more sessions. He can already swim from one end to the other end - he's just got to adjust his mindset.

Umm... this is not a good shot, I know. I wanted to give you an idea of how big the pool is. Ryan is that tiny dark patch in the water near the side of the pool near where the red thingy is. His coach is on the right side of the photo, about halfway along the length of the pool. Ryan can swim the whole length of the pool, one end to the other, no problem.

Ryan is also easing back into preschool. It's always a tough adjustment when we get back from a trip. After many late nights of playing with his cousins, it's hard to get him to bed early and to school on time the next day. We're not quite there yet - today we only got to school at 10 am. Be that as it may, Ryan's been pretty excited about sharing stories about his adventures in Mauritius with his school mates so it's been a happy few days for him.

Ryan attended a birthday party last Saturday. Harry, one of his best friends from his previous class, was there and the two of them had loads of fun. Harry's mum told me at the party that Harry told her that, "Ryan's not in my class anymore but I really miss him." Aww.

Babydoll started a new term with Julia Gabriel Bilingual Playclub. It is also her last term (being her fourth term) and so when we paid the fee for this new term, we also submitted the withdrawal form for the programme. Hello and goodbye.

Last Sunday, the littles attended their last Shichida class. No more! Hello to free and easy Sundays from now on! I didn't ask Ryan's opinion at the time that I withdrew him (and Rachel) from the programme but I did ask him last Saturday and he said that he didn't want to go anymore. He's been in the programme for five years. That's long enough. Babydoll has attended for 1.5 years, which is long enough too!

As if we couldn't wait to start our new Sunday routine (whatever that may be), we spent the rest of our Sunday at Vivocity. I think we were there for about five hours doing various things, including having two meals.

Babydoll wanted to have a go at the motorised vehicles so we bought her (and Ryan) some time there. She actually wanted to sit on the animal-shaped ones but she was too small to operate those so she had to settle for the cars and jeeps. I helped her to steer but after a while, she refused to let me help her. Here she was (with my handbag hanging on the back of her jeep).

Here are the littles, waiting for their turn on the Vivocity train. We went on it twice. The first time, we bought tickets for the first wagon but Ryan wanted to sit in the coal car and he spent most of the first ride whining about it so I bought a second ride, this time in the coal car.

Ok, that's all. More tomorrow.

Snippets of last week

I have been very busy lately, hence the patchy blogging. Life is hectic, happy and mostly good. Our cat, Tiger, is in the hospital again so that's the not-so-good part. Tiger is an old man now and with old age, comes more health issues. Hope he gets well soon.

We are going on a long holiday next week - we are off to Mauritius! An old friend is getting married and he invited us to his engagement party there. We've never been to Mauritius and we are very much looking forward to it!

Ok, this is going to be a quick run-down of last week's happenings, Sunday to Saturday. It was a good week, full of lovely happy moments. With two of these little people running around you all the time, life is always good.

This was Sunday morning (two Sundays ago). Ryan was off to his swim class and babydoll wanted to go "shimming" too. She got all dressed up, as you can see.

Shichida on Sunday afternoon (again, two Sundays ago). We have withdrawn both the littles from Shichida so this is their last term. Last Sunday, we skipped class and we will also be skipping the next two classes because of our Mauritius trip. I know I mentioned that I would write about Shichida and why we are withdrawing. I'll do that soon, but probably not very soon, haha.

Babydoll also finished up the term with Julia Gabriel Bilingual Playclub. She wore an octopus costume for the last class - didn't get photos, will try to snap some and share. She will be doing one more term and that will be the last.

Bedtime stories with Richard. This book is called The Pout-Pout Fish by Deborah Diesen. It is babydoll's current favourite book - she will ask for it every night. It's about a fish who is sad and depressed because he's got a pout. He goes around spreading "dreary-wearies all over the place". One day, when he's upside down, he realises that his pout is actually a smile and he becomes a happy fish. One day, I told Ryan (when he was having an extended whine), "You're making people angry like the pout-pout fish!" and he told me, "No, the pout-pout fish is different - when I whine, people get angry; when the pout-pout fish is around, people get sad." Heh heh. Good point. Anyway, I told him that it's the same with anger and sadness and happiness and all those emotions, so he needs to be careful what he spreads to others. He understood that, so now when he's having a bit of a whine, I sometimes tell him, "Don't be a pout-pout fish!", and he'll snap right out of it.

Ryan started doing golf once a week in a group. This was the first lesson. He looked at the board and said, "That's a lot of safety rules..."

There was no school on Friday and we went to Mita's house in the morning. Mita is a talented photographer and she shot some photos of the littles (free of charge!). Will share them when I receive the copies. (These photos you see here are my own amateur phone photos.)

Next photo - this was dinner on Saturday night. The littles are playing a game while waiting for our food to arrive. We do allow iPad at the dinner table. It's not a standard feature - we don't set it up on purpose everytime we eat. Usually it's a flow-on from the pre-meal stage, meaning Ryan is already playing with it before we sit down for a meal so we let him carry on. If he's not on the iPad when we sit down for our meal, then that's the way it stays.

Although we never initiate iPad time, I actually think it's good for him to have the iPad when we dine in busy and crowded places. Some places can be over stimulating and unsettling so, if he has his iPad, he can watch his familiar videos or play his favourite games and tune out the external distractions. (Of course, if you really don't like the iPad, you can always bring a book or a toy - we've done that too.)

All right then. More tomorrow. Peace out. Or in babydoll's case, Peaces Out.

Weekends at our house

We've been very busy lately. March has been an eventful month for our little family, full of big and small events. Ryan has been attending a birthday party almost every weekend and his work schedule was also fairly busy. Babydoll has been having an exciting month too - she's had a few interesting experiences.

Since the start of this year, we've had a new weekend routine. On Saturday mornings, babydoll goes for her Bilingual Playclub class at Julia Gabriel, which is two hours long. Richard usually accompanies her while I stay with Ryan. The two littles have Shichida in the afternoon so if Ryan has a linking memory test or poem recitation that day, I will spend about ten to fifteen minutes practising with him before we go outdoors to play (Rachel has nothing to prepare). I might also take some time to tidy the house, while Ryan works on some of his own projects. I usually rush through all this because I want to get to the part that both of us look forward to - getting outdoors!

We spend most of the two hours outdoors and that is the best part of those two hours. Actually one of my resolutions for 2014 is to spend more time outdoors so this is a perfect pocket of time to do it. I treasure this time with Ryan very much. We take his kick scooter out and head for either the beach or the playground. He is always happy and we always have a great time chatting and connecting.

Sometimes Ryan and I will eat lunch on our own before Richard and babydoll get out of class. Otherwise, we all eat together at home. After lunch, Ryan will have a shower while babydoll goes down for her nap. We all leave for Shichida together around 1 pm. The rest of Saturday is free and we usually spend it splashing about in our new and *very tiny* swimming pool.

On Sunday, we all go out for breakfast (usually prata) before Ryan's swimming class in the morning. When he's in the pool, either Richard or I will bring babydoll somewhere. The first time, I brought her to the Botanic Gardens while Richard stayed poolside. Since then, Richard has been her companion and they usually visit the art museums or art galleries around Dempsey Hill. The rest of Sunday is free.

We switched the kids over to the Shichida branch at Toa Payoh this term. At the Springleaf branch, they were closing Ryan's class (there were going to be less than four students in the class) and they were also going to change the teacher for Rachel's class, so we took the opportunity to get them into matching time slots which, as it turned out, was only possible at Toa Payoh. It's a little further for us to get to Toa Payoh but having the two kids go into class at the same time is such a time-saver and parking is so convenient. The disadvantage of having matching time slots is that, when one of the parents can't make it, then both of the kids can't go for class. This happened a few times when Richard had to take a meeting on Saturday. We skipped class and I stayed home with the two littles.

For next term, our schedule will change again, as Ryan's Shichida class is, again, closing. We've switched the two kids over to Sunday afternoon in matching time slots, still at Toa Payoh. Actually, I wanted to withdraw babydoll from the programme but the school said that it was too late into the term and I would have to forfeit my deposit if I withdrew her then. Since we'd already signed Ryan up for next term, we decided to let babydoll continue as well. I'll share my reasons and thoughts on withdrawing from the programme another time.

So I hope you enjoyed this peek into our weekend routine. All the photos were shot during Mama-and-Ryan time on Saturday mornings over the last few months.

Updates on Ryan

These days, Ryan has been impressing me with his social skills and self-confidence. He is not shy or withdrawn with people; he is polite and courteous; and he is interested to ask them questions about themselves.

Today he was with me in my office and he told me that he wanted to wash his hands. I was busy vetting a document so I asked him to go to the pantry and ask aunty (the tea lady) to help him. He said okay and told me, "I'm going to pretend to be an adult". He was gone quite a while and I started to wonder what happened. A while later, he popped back into my room and told me, "Mummy, I went to the potty".

I was completely in shock because, to get to the toilet, he would have had to get out of the office door using a key card, open the toilet door using a number code and lock the door using the fancy lock mechanism. To get back in, he would have to unlock that fancy lock and then open the office door using a key card. Plus my office door is heavy for a little kid to pull open.

He told me that someone helped him. And I was even more in shock because he would have had to approach someone and explain his predicament and articulate the help he needed. Wow, just wow. My four year old is growing wings.

In other news, Ryan's IQ test results came back from Shichida last week. Shichida says that its IQ test is different from the other IQ tests out there, but generally the higher score the better and it also told us what the range of what most students scored. Ryan's score far surpassed this range. Ryan's score, if translated to an IQ test like the one Mensa administers, places him in the "genius" or "highly gifted" category. I don't know how he compares to the other students, and I didn't ask how the other students fared. Just something interesting to note.

Do you like the T-shirt he's wearing in the photos above? I sewed it up and Richard applied the image to the front using a transfer. The image was shot with Richard's iPhone and edited using both an app and Photoshop. In the image, Ryan is wearing another T-shirt that I sewed for him, which is actually a different colour. You can see it on him in this post. The pattern for both of the T-shirts is the Recess Raglan by See Kate Sew.

The shorts are also mama-made, using the Kid Shorts pattern by Made. I made a pair for Rachel too, in the same fabric with a variation on the same pattern. Here they are, front and back.

That's all for now!

Updates

Time for a little update on what we've been up to or, more accurately, what Ryan has been up to. Ryan went back to school last Monday after having a good solid break. After a week of school, we had this conversation on Friday night:

Ryan: Mama, I want a holiday.
Mama: You want a holiday? What are you going to do on your holiday?
Ryan: Stay at home and play with my Magna-tiles.
Mama: That sounds fun.
Ryan: Yeah. I don't need so many "school*".
Mama: How come?
Ryan: Because "school*" takes a long time.
Mama: Ok, why do you say you have so many?
Ryan: There is one hundred "school*".
Mama: Well, how many do you need?
Ryan: I need only twenty. Twenty is enough.

(* Ryan actually said his school's name here. I've omitted it for this post.)

Well, luckily for him, the next day was Saturday and he had a long weekend coming up, as Monday was a school holiday. On Sunday night, after dinner with his aunt, he brought up the topic again and told me that he wanted to go to his other aunt's house (in Malaysia) for a holiday. He packed his backpack into his luggage and declared himself all ready to go. I asked him if he'd like to pack some underwear and he said nope. Heh heh.

Speaking of his backpack, I introduced him to his new Thomas the Train backpack, which was a gift from Sue (thanks Sue! Ryan loves it!). It was an essential part of his outfit, as you can see here.

Well, you can't really see the backpack as only the straps are showing but you get the idea. The pants are the W Pants which I sewed for him, which you've seen in this post. The T-shirt with Thomas the Train on it was bought from Mothercare a long time ago, but worn for the first time in this photo. I'd always thought that this turquoise blue was a difficult colour to coordinate but the pants and the T-shirt look like they were made for each other. He was pleased as punch with this outfit.

We were at the Night Safari when the photo was taken. This was the Friday before last. Alicia planned the outing for our two families and we had a great time. Happiest of all was Ryan - he had such a great time with Alicia's son, Brayden. Babydoll managed to see quite a number of the animals too, before she fell asleep at her usual bedtime. Richard and I took turns to carry her. It was a perfect night for the safari. The weather was good and the animals were out and about, basking in the moonlight. By the time we left, it was close to midnight!

Ryan met up with Brayden again last Saturday, when we went to check out the "Titans of the Past" exhibition at the Singapore Science Centre.

Ryan has seen a few dinosaur-themed shows and exhibitions before (including Walking with Dinosaurs - the Arena Spectacular and the dinosaur exhibition at the American Museum of Natural History). So he wasn't particularly impressed with the dinosaurs although he had quite a lot of fun playing with the exhibits. Babydoll, on the other hand, was quite impressed and she actually said "Woah..." a few times as she pointed to the exhibits. Ryan was more engrossed with these dinosaur-shaped puzzles and did them a few times before he was willing to move on.

When we got outside after finishing the exhibition, Ryan tried the Lazer Maze Challenge. He said he was scared, but he still went through it so I'm pretty proud of him for being so brave. The ticket pays for two tries, for two players playing simultaneously. I went in with Ryan and, on our second go, we actually made it to the top ten scores on the board (for easy level!).

In other news, Ryan had an "IQ test" during his Shichida class two Sundays ago. The parents were asked to stay outside the classroom while the test was being administered so I have no idea what sort of questions were asked. I was also not told how he fared on the test. No materials were given to prepare for the test. I was a little concerned that it would be worksheet-style and timed, which is not something that Ryan is used to. Alicia was kind enough to pass me some worksheets before the test so that I could show him a few things like "read the instructions", "erase your answer if you think it is wrong and write the answer you want", "don't worry if you don't know the answer", etc. I do not know how the test was actually carried out but, listening outside the classroom with the other parents, I could hear the children shouting out the answers at certain points, so I guess they worked through the questions together.

Yet in other news, we are planning a short family holiday at the end of the month. So Ryan's holiday is not too far away (although he doesn't know it yet).

Updates on Rachel

Babydoll had a good weekend. I met up with some mummies on Saturday morning at Hokey Pokey, Millenia Walk, and babydoll had lots of fun. I'll show you some photos (and a video) tomorrow!

Babydoll's personality is really starting to show now and we are loving every bit of it. She is friendly, chatty, gentle, determined, fearless, girly, smart, loves animals and is downright adorable. We keep asking ourselves, was Ryan this adorable? Hahaha, we probably felt the same way about Ryan, actually. We are all suckers for our children, aren't we?

Babydoll skipped her Heguru class last Saturday to go to Hokey Pokey and there was no class the week before, so no updates on that front.

She did go for her Shichida classes, and her sensei is very impressed with her - not so much with her abilities but with her temperament. Babydoll hardly fusses. If she is bored, she will just get off her chair and look for something more interesting, but she won't scream or shout or cry. She doesn't kick up a fuss over the materials and has learned to give them up after each activity. All the other students have been disruptive at times, two of them in particular. She joined an existing class, instead of starting with a fresh batch, so it's nothing to do with how long the children have been in the programme. Her sensei has asked me, on numerous occasions, whether I have any advice for the mummies, as Rachel is so different from the rest.

Anyway, this was her term report for last term, which was her first term:

"Though Rachel joined the programme this term, Rachel adapted very well to the programme. Able to answer questions posed by the instructor. Rachel is a girl who never throw tantrums and barely cries in class. Keep it up."

In other news, we bought Rachel her first pair of walking shoes two weeks ago (the evening before we went to Legoland). Here she was at the shoe department at Isetan. She could only fit into the smallest size for Clarks, so our choices were limited. In the end, I decided on a pair of pink sandals.

Babydoll can walk pretty well now, although she does need help now and then. She is starting to want to walk, instead of crawl, up and down the stairs, so I help her with that. Also, although she can walk on her own, she likes to hold my hand while she walks, and I really like that. Ryan still holds my hand, too. It is such a great feeling.

Apart from the closeness that comes with holding hands, both the littles like to stay close to us when we go walking on the streets or in the busy malls, and they don't feel the need to run amok in such situations. So we've been pretty fortunate in that respect.

Speaking of running, here's a photo of my three favourite people, running around our place. Well, babydoll wasn't quite running, but she was definitely on the move.

Richard had just come back from his bike run and the usual routine is that he will spend some time with Ryan on the kick scooter before everyone jumps into the bath. This time, babydoll joined in the fun. The boys were doing laps around the place and babydoll would meet them in the middle and laugh everytime they passed her.

Love this shot of babydoll. Such girlish delight!

Please forgive the dirty T-shirt. She was touching the cars, including the wheels. And yes, I let her, after checking that the cars were not hot.

Oh yes, if you're curious about what Rachel is munching on in the first two photos - it's a chicken wing! Check out that pincer grasp! We usually toss her the wing tip to chew on and sometimes the mid-wing, after wiping off as much oil as we can. Richard, our resident chicken connoisseur, is very proud.

Updates on Ryan

Ryan has not been attending school for a while now. He will go back to school after the Hari Raya / National Day holidays next week, so he has one more week of lounging about in the morning. He has been pretty busy these past six weeks. Here's a rundown of what he's been up to.

We kicked off his break with a short trip to KL. It was mainly to escape from the suffocating haze in Singapore at that time. Ryan had a ball of a time with his cousins and spent some time with my mother who was visiting from Australia.

When we got back, Ryan participated in two programmes conducted in Chinese at his pre-school. The first programme was an investigation into sound, and the second one was an investigation into movement. These were separate from the usual school programme so he got a different set of teachers. He also got a (mostly) different set of classmates - his group consisted of children from the Nursery 2 and the kindergarten classes. Only a few of the school children signed up for this programme, so his class was quite small. Each programme lasted two weeks and they were conducted back-to-back.

One day, when Richard was picking him up from the school, one of the English teachers asked whether Ryan attends another pre-school (in addition to the one he is at). Richard's reaction was - Huh? She explained that she noticed that Ryan can read and Ryan's Nursery 2 class doesn't teach reading at the level that Ryan is at. Richard explained that we taught him at home. Heh heh. We will soon reach the point when Ryan's ability to read is just a basic skill but for now, it is a superpower.

A couple of days later, and again when Richard was picking Ryan up, one of the Mandarin teachers asked, where did Ryan learn Hanyu Pinyin. Again, Richard went, huh? She said that she showed the students the flag of the USA with the Mandarin characters for USA and the Hanyu Pinyin for USA, and Ryan could read the Hanyu Pinyin. Richard said, we taught him phonics at home. To which she said, nope, this is more than that because he used the correct intonation. She was very insistent that he could read the Hanyu Pinyin. This one stumped us, because we have not taught him the Chinese words for USA, and we have not taught him Hanyu Pinyin. Some investigation is needed here!

Home learning at night has been a little sporadic because it depends on how tough a day he's had. I do try to build in more writing activities when we do stuff at home. In relation to Shichida activities, after Ryan's Makoto Club showcase and over this hectic period, we stopped giving him Shichida activities at home. We will pick the routine up again this weekend, because he has to do poem recitation and linking memory recitation in class on Sunday.

Also during this break from school, on 6 July 2013, Ryan made his violin debut at Yong Siew Toh Conservatory. It was a fabulous way to conclude his one year of violin. He performed splendidly.

The experience of preparing for the concert was a lesson for me. Ordinarily, we would be quite casual about Ryan's violin practice at home. Leading up to the concert however, we knew that he was not prepared and so we spent about a week practising seriously. As mentioned previously, I went hard on him a few times - two times, actually. Believe me, I knew. Even as I lost it, I knew I was being a monster. Ryan was an absolute angel - he bore my wrath and my impatience with no illwill and he soldiered on. We managed to end every practice session with some measure of progress only because he was patient with me. Each time I hurt him with my words, with my expressions, he forgave me. And my heart would break into a million pieces, my little man loves me that much. What an idiot I am, who's the adult here. I promised him, and myself, that I would be better, and I am determined to be.

So, Ryan has graduated from his one-year Suzuki violin group programme. The next step is to sign him up for individual lessons at the school. We haven't done that yet, for a few reasons. First, we are weighing a few options in terms of classes. I mentioned previously, that we are considering martial arts classes for Ryan. Also, Ryan has been asking to try out the piano, so we will look into that. The second reason is that he started his catwalk course last Saturday, which will go on for six lessons over six weeks. So we will let him complete that before we commit him to something else. Third reason is that we are considering getting a tutor from elsewhere, because the tutors at his school have limited availability. Anyone has a good piano/violin tutor to recommend?

Ryan has been pretty busy with auditions, castings, and shoots. In fact, he just had a shoot today for a print ad. As per his last job, he played the role of the brother in a family of four. The mother was Korean, the father was Chinese, the sister was Thai-Chinese, and everyone assumed Ryan was Japanese. Somehow, they looked like a family.

Over the past six weeks that Ryan has been out of school and up to his own stuff, he has been so busy that we didn't manage to meet up with his friends. There were a few days here and there when we tried to set something up but were unsuccessful. He has a lot of social interaction when he is on his modelling assignments, but he does miss his friends. Nevertheless, his guardian angel is always looking out for him - we bumped into his good pal Brayden twice! The first time was in Ngee Ann City and the second was when Brayden tracked us down at Pappa at River Valley Road.

Anyway, a funny story to share - yesterday evening, Ryan went for a wardrobe fitting for a shoot. Richard fetched him from his nanny and took him to the studio. After they were done there, they went to fetch Rachel. By that time, it was already about 8.30 pm and Ryan hadn't eaten anything since lunch. He didn't complain at all throughout and just followed Richard while Richard hustled and bustled about. When everyone finally settled down in the car, Ryan placed his hand on Richard's lap and looked him in the eye. "Look," he said calmly and seriously, which got Richard's full attention. "Let's go and get fries and nuggets."

That boy knows what's important.

We balance out Ryan's busy days with a lot of "nothing days" - when he has the whole day to do absolutely nothing. Ironically, it is these days when he doesn't want to rest. He's bored and wants to get something going so he keeps himself awake in order not to miss anything. His nanny's daughter, Caroline, takes him out to town some days. They went to see a movie (Monsters University) recently and she's been trying to persuade him to watch the one with the minions. Other times, they just walk around and enjoy the sights.

Ok, that's all. Quite a long post huh? This boy has been busy!
