Snippets of our weekend

Here are some snippets of the weekend just past. It isn't a complete account of what we did, just some glimpses here and there.

We started our weekend on Friday, because the nanny was on leave. It felt exactly like a weekend, except that Richard was working. He joined us for lunch though.

Here are the littles enjoying playing together. They are painting here. They do squabble and sometimes, when it seems like one is disturbing the other's work, we will offer a new activity. For example, if Ryan is focused on building his train tracks, babydoll may come along and mess things up. I usually let them try to resolve things on their own but if they can't, I sometimes offer babydoll another activity. This only works for about three seconds - Ryan will then hurry over and join in! Well, at least they know that being a duo is more fun than going solo. More and more frequently now, they manage to resolve their little squabbles on their own, because they do want to keep playing together.

Here's babydoll being babydoll. I always get asked if my children are not pure Chinese or if they are some other race/blend. I think it must be their round eyes?

There was lots of water time. I read somewhere, "If your kids are crabby, put them in water." This is very true! Not that the littles were crabby but being in water definitely has a positive effect all round.

The tide was higher than usual on Saturday morning, after the heavy downpour the day before. I didn't drain our little swimming pool after our afternoon swim and the heavy rain in the evening flooded the adjoining bedroom!

Ryan was pleased to discover that he could do a new stunt on his scooter - riding on one front wheel (and the back wheel).

More water time.

Sitting at the sink, brushing their teeth. Up till now, we do not have a fixed teeth-brushing routine! The kids actually love to brush their teeth, they just need me to give them the signal. I must try harder to make this stick!

 Okay, that's all!

Adjustments

Our week, and weekend, was a strange mix of getting back into our routine and, at the same time, saying goodbye to parts of it. That is actually a good representation of our life in general at the moment. It's a carousel of hellos and goodbyes right now, and "adjust" is the catchphrase of the day.

I am still missing my cat very much. Life at home without Tiger is significantly different and this has been an adjustment that I have not been willing to make. I have not touched his things at all - everything is exactly the way he left them.

Let me share some updates on the littles. Before we went on our trip to Mauritius, Ryan's swimming coach (at Tanglin Village) told me that Ryan could graduate to their big swimming pool at Turf City. I was really happy to hear that. Firstly of course, because Ryan is progressing in his swimming. Second is because, for the past couple of months, when Ryan was having his class in the small pool at Tanglin Village, there was another class being conducted at the same time in the pool. I felt it was a little noisy and distracting to have so many people in the small pool.

So Ryan attended his first class at Turf City last week. We asked for a weekday slot with the same coach. He swam so well in the big pool that his coach said he could join a more advanced class than the one she originally intended him to join. That was nice to hear!

Funny thing was that, when I asked him, Ryan said that he preferred the small pool because "this big pool takes too long to swim to the other end" and "I can't hold my breath long enough in the big pool" (referring to his back stroke breathing technique). Heh heh. I told him that it will get easier with a few more sessions. He can already swim from one end to the other end - he's just got to adjust his mindset.

Umm... this is not a good shot, I know. I wanted to give you an idea of how big the pool is. Ryan is that tiny dark patch in the water near the side of the pool near where the red thingy is. His coach is on the right side of the photo, about halfway along the length of the pool. Ryan can swim the whole length of the pool, one end to the other, no problem.

Ryan is also easing back into preschool. It's always a tough adjustment when we get back from a trip. After many late nights of playing with his cousins, it's hard to get him to bed early and to school on time the next day. We're not quite there yet - today we only got to school at 10 am. Be that as it may, Ryan's been pretty excited about sharing stories about his adventures in Mauritius with his school mates so it's been a happy few days for him.

Ryan attended a birthday party last Saturday. Harry, one of his best friends from his previous class, was there and the two of them had loads of fun. Harry's mum told me at the party that Harry told her that, "Ryan's not in my class anymore but I really miss him." Aww.

Babydoll started a new term with Julia Gabriel Bilingual Playclub. It is also her last term (being her fourth term) and so when we paid the fee for this new term, we also submitted the withdrawal form for the programme. Hello and goodbye.

Last Sunday, the littles attended their last Shichida class. No more! Hello to free and easy Sundays from now on! I didn't ask Ryan's opinion at the time that I withdrew him (and Rachel) from the programme but I did ask him last Saturday and he said that he didn't want to go anymore. He's been in the programme for five years. That's long enough. Babydoll has attended for 1.5 years, which is long enough too!

As if we couldn't wait to start our new Sunday routine (whatever that may be), we spent the rest of our Sunday at Vivocity. I think we were there for about five hours doing various things, including having two meals.

Babydoll wanted to have a go at the motorised vehicles so we bought her (and Ryan) some time there. She actually wanted to sit on the animal-shaped ones but she was too small to operate those so she had to settle for the cars and jeeps. I helped her to steer but after a while, she refused to let me help her. Here she was (with my handbag hanging on the back of her jeep).

Here are the littles, waiting for their turn on the Vivocity train. We went on it twice. The first time, we bought tickets for the first wagon but Ryan wanted to sit in the coal car and he spent most of the first ride whining about it so I bought a second ride, this time in the coal car.

Ok, that's all. More tomorrow.

Snippets of last week

I have been very busy lately, hence the patchy blogging. Life is hectic, happy and mostly good. Our cat, Tiger, is in the hospital again so that's the not-so-good part. Tiger is an old man now and with old age, comes more health issues. Hope he gets well soon.

We are going on a long holiday next week - we are off to Mauritius! An old friend is getting married and he invited us to his engagement party there. We've never been to Mauritius and we are very much looking forward to it!

Ok, this is going to be a quick run-down of last week's happenings, Sunday to Saturday. It was a good week, full of lovely happy moments. With two of these little people running around you all the time, life is always good.

This was Sunday morning (two Sundays ago). Ryan was off to his swim class and babydoll wanted to go "shimming" too. She got all dressed up, as you can see.

Shichida on Sunday afternoon (again, two Sundays ago). We have withdrawn both the littles from Shichida so this is their last term. Last Sunday, we skipped class and we will also be skipping the next two classes because of our Mauritius trip. I know I mentioned that I would write about Shichida and why we are withdrawing. I'll do that soon, but probably not very soon, haha.

Babydoll also finished up the term with Julia Gabriel Bilingual Playclub. She wore an octopus costume for the last class - didn't get photos, will try to snap some and share. She will be doing one more term and that will be the last.

Bedtime stories with Richard. This book is called The Pout-Pout Fish by Deborah Diesen. It is babydoll's current favourite book - she will ask for it every night. It's about a fish who is sad and depressed because he's got a pout. He goes around spreading "dreary-wearies all over the place". One day, when he's upside down, he realises that his pout is actually a smile and he becomes a happy fish. One day, I told Ryan (when he was having an extended whine), "You're making people angry like the pout-pout fish!" and he told me, "No, the pout-pout fish is different - when I whine, people get angry; when the pout-pout fish is around, people get sad." Heh heh. Good point. Anyway, I told him that it's the same with anger and sadness and happiness and all those emotions, so he needs to be careful what he spreads to others. He understood that, so now when he's having a bit of a whine, I sometimes tell him, "Don't be a pout-pout fish!", and he'll snap right out of it.

Ryan started doing golf once a week in a group. This was the first lesson. He looked at the board and said, "That's a lot of safety rules..."

There was no school on Friday and we went to Mita's house in the morning. Mita is a talented photographer and she shot some photos of the littles (free of charge!). Will share them when I receive the copies. (These photos you see here are my own amateur phone photos.)

Next photo - this was dinner on Saturday night. The littles are playing a game while waiting for our food to arrive. We do allow iPad at the dinner table. It's not a standard feature - we don't set it up on purpose everytime we eat. Usually it's a flow-on from the pre-meal stage, meaning Ryan is already playing with it before we sit down for a meal so we let him carry on. If he's not on the iPad when we sit down for our meal, then that's the way it stays.

Although we never initiate iPad time, I actually think it's good for him to have the iPad when we dine in busy and crowded places. Some places can be over stimulating and unsettling so, if he has his iPad, he can watch his familiar videos or play his favourite games and tune out the external distractions. (Of course, if you really don't like the iPad, you can always bring a book or a toy - we've done that too.)

All right then. More tomorrow. Peace out. Or in babydoll's case, Peaces Out.

Some sweetness for the weekend

We spent last weekend in the pool. The weather was scorching and we sought refuge in the water.

The rain clouds have been making an appearance the last couple of days so perhaps this weekend will be less of a sauna. Also, it's Mother Day this weekend! Any plans? We are planning to cook our own Mother's Day meal! Also, Ryan has a birthday party to attend - he's been attending so many parties that I feel like he has more friends than I do!

Have a great weekend!

Our very tiny pool

I've mentioned our *very tiny* swimming pool before, so I thought I'd show you some photos of it today.

A couple of months back, Richard had the brilliant idea of converting this small space into a water play area for the kids so that's what we did. We do have a decent-sized swimming pool as well as a kid-sized swimming/wading pool in our condo so this is really an extra, although it serves a slightly different function.

I said that it's tiny, but to be fair, it is a little bigger than it looks in the photos! It is big enough to fit four of us quite comfortably and if we fill it up deep enough, Ryan can even swim in it. Usually we fill it up to the level of babydoll's shoulders when she's sitting down in it. We drain it out after every use after using some of the water to water the plants.

It is long enough to fit both Richard and I sitting stretched out, one at each end, with plenty of space leftover between and beside us for the kids to romp around. Of course, it's not meant for adults to swim - if we wanted to do that, we would go down to the proper swimming pool at the condo. For us adults, this is meant to be a chill-out place where the kids can also have fun. Richard and I usually have long and meaningful conversations in the pool, even with the kids splashing about around us, because we are so relaxed and comfortable.

It is surrounded by walls and very private, which means that we can get into the pool wearing just a t-shirt and underwear/shorts. Richard and I have imagined sitting in our tiny pool late at night, when the kids are asleep - just the two of us, with candles burning on the ledge and drinks in our hands. I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon though!

We've been using it once a week, almost every week, and usually, it's the four of us in the pool at the same time. The kids absolutely love it.

A side note on babydoll's water skills. Babydoll is not doing any swimming lessons yet, but she does have a lot of water time. She goes swimming in the public pool with her nanny's family once every fortnight (one of her nanny's daughters is a swimming instructor) and she has lots of water play at home. As you can see from the photos, she has a lot of water confidence and, although not a swimmer, she is independent in this pool.

We made some inquiries last year with Aquaducks to enrol her in a time slot near Ryan's lesson time, but didn't have any luck. Our plans for the family's routine this year are still a little uncertain, so we are holding off for now. We do still hold the view that swimming is a critical life skill to have, so that is definitely on the cards for babydoll in the near future.

If you're wondering, Ryan started lessons when he was one year old, mainly because we did not have access to a swimming pool at that time. I didn't expect him to learn to swim at that age; I simply wanted to ensure that he retained his water confidence. Now, four years later, he can swim pretty well. I am forever grateful that we did expose him to the water at a young age because there's been so many occasions where he's been able to go into the water independently - birthday parties at swimming pools, trips to water parks like Waterbom Bali, holidays with swimming at the beach or in the hotel pools, etc. Quite apart from the fact that I don't worry (too much) about him, he also gets to enjoy himself and have fun, instead of stressing about being in the water.

Quick catch-up

Here's a quick photographic round-up of the last two weeks.

We split the kids up for bedtime and they are reunited in the morning when they are still asleep/semi-awake in bed. Normally the kids carry on sleeping while the adults get ready for work, although sometimes they wake up anyway and pull us from slumber. That's when we are greeted by two sunshine smiles. Love it.

Babydoll's hair is curly, curly, curly. I'm looking forward to seeing it go past her shoulders - I'm sure it will be gorgeous.

Babydoll has been expressing her fashion sense lately. See this photo below - Richard initially dressed her in this top and a pair of yellow pants. Babydoll went right back into her wardrobe and rummaged around until she found this plaid skirt. She brought it to us and asked to be changed into it. I do think the skirt looks much nicer as part of the outfit! This girl has a good fashion eye!

Since that time, I try to present her with options when I'm dressing her. She always, always chooses the more girly one. Like this dress (which was a gift from her Aunty Mary).

And this dress too. Girly right?

We spent an enjoyable evening with Alicia, Chris and Brayden two Sundays ago. They bought some black pepper crabs from Eng Seng for our dinner and we had lots of laughter playing board games. Ryan's strategy was completely absent but he somehow managed to win most of the games. Beginner's luck, I think!

Richard and I had a peaceful and satisfying dinner at Crab in da Bag at Big Splash. This was after our parent teacher conference at Ryan's preschool last week and before we went to fetch the kids from the nanny. It was our first time at this restaurant and it was good - we'll be back!.

I'll tell you more about the parent teacher conference in another post. For now, let's focus on the crab! This is the "before" photo.

And this is the "after" photo. As you may notice, we don't eat the crab roe so next time we'll ask for the male crab.

One of Ryan's friends had a birthday party last Saturday. It was a bowling and swimming party at the Chinese Swimming Club, with a spot of dancing in between. Ryan enjoyed himself so so so much. It was supposed to be "drop-off" so we stuck around for a short while to watch him bowl and then we went off for about an hour or so (for Rachel's Heguru and for me to go to the supermarket). Shortly after we left, Ryan called me (on the host's mobile phone) to tell me to come back! He was quite nervous without us and I think that most of the parents actually stayed on. The host assured me that he would be fine and that he just needed to hear my voice. They started up the dancing and singing segment right after that and, when we came back shortly after, the host told me that Ryan was so excited to sing and dance! Apparently, he confidently grabbed the microphone, put on some sunglasses and busted some moves! I asked him later what song he sang and he said "Gangnam Style"!

When we got back to the party, the kids were already in the pool. Ryan had a blast there! He was the absolute last person to leave the pool and only because he thought we were leaving without him (actually we were just walking back to the bowling area to find his shoes). It was a fabulous party - Happy 5th birthday to Leila!

On Sunday, we overslept and missed Rachel's Shichida class, while Ryan barely made it for swimming. For lunch, we visited the farmer's market at Pasarbella at The Grandstand. After a disappointing experience at the farmer's market at Dempsey, I was looking forward to much better offerings and this time, I was not disappointed. Worth the trip - do go if you can. We ate at Oceans of Seafood which is towards the back. It serves a wide Japanese seafood menu (the sashimi is supposedly very good) and a limited but good Western seafood menu (go for the fish and chips).

Last but not least, while we were shopping in the supermarket last Sunday, Rachel spotted this!

And yes, it was Rachel who spotted it before any of us did. She pointed to it and said "papa". Errr... she doesn't know how to say "Ryan" or "korkor" (big brother) yet, so we'll accept that! If you see Ryan's poster in Cold Storage, give it a secret wink, won't you?

That's all!
