Still a baby

Last month when we were in KL, babydoll accompanied her cousin to a hairsalon. One of the stylists there commented, "she's so sexy!" I said, oh it must be her hair? and the stylist said, no, it's everything about her!

Well.

Since then, I sometimes look at babydoll and yes, I do see a sexiness. It's in her confidence, her cheekiness, her full-on laugh. It's in her little gestures - the way she sticks out her tongue at you, her little hops and skips as she examines the world around her, the girlish way she covers her mouth when she giggles. It's how she runs around like a tomboy even as she's dressed up in tulle and sequins. It's in the way she carries her handbag, or rather, handbags, in the crook of her arm. It's how she can wriggle out of any situation with just a gleam and a twinkle of an eye. It is her unshakeable determination. It is her absolute faith in herself. It's her sense of humour, her love of all things fun and funny.

Yes, she is pretty sexy. However, that's not the first adjective I would use to describe her! She's still my baby, my little babydoll. Let's keep it that way for a while, eh?

Festival of Lights at preschool

Last week, Ryan's preschool held a carnival called the Festival of Lights, in celebration of Deepavali. The students made decorations and they set up stalls to sell food, handmade crafts and services like face-painting, henna and non-henna temporary tattoos. Some external vendors were invited to set up stalls as well. There were activities such as dress-up and arts and crafts. All proceeds went to charity.

Everyone came dressed appropriately and of course, babydoll came in her Indian princess get-up. You must be wondering whether she wears anything else nowadays, haha. Since we bought it, she has worn it about six times. She loves it!

Babydoll had a blast at the carnival! She's familiar with Ryan's preschool so she needed no warm-up time at all. Without waiting for an invitation, she joined the older children in the playground, climbing up and sliding down in her glamourous outfit, hanging off bars and jumping into tyres. She even inserted herself into a football game with boys more than twice her age and size, and managed to get a hold of the ball a couple of times (with a little help). She was also an expert at the arts and crafts station - cool and calm, deliberate in her choice of colours and patterns.

Here's Ryan in his Indian outfit, which he has also worn many times. After many years, at long last, he is finally outgrowing it, so this is (I promise!) the last time you'll see him in it.

There were beautiful decorations all over the preschool, including lots of rangoli, of course.

Prior to the carnival, in addition to planning what to sell at their stall (baked goods and face-painting), Ryan's class had a discussion about which charity they would like the fundraising proceeds to be donated to. I thought this was a wonderful project for the students! After the discussion, the students made a bar graph to represent the results (the winner was "the poor people"). The class also wrote a note to the school administration to let them know of their decision (I just adore how they sign off as "Love, K2A"). The letter was hand delivered by a group of children, led by Ryan. Ryan also acted as photographer and photographed their efforts.

All in all, the carnival was a fun evening for the littles. Babydoll probably now has the idea that going to preschool is super fun! For the past few weeks, she has been bugging me to send her to preschool with Ryan, so after the carnival, I think she will be even more determined to get started as soon as possible!

Halloween 2014

For Halloween this year, we went trick-or-treating, followed by a potluck neighbourhood street party! It was fantastic! The neighbourhood really came together and made it such a great night. Have a look!

Ryan went as Peter Pan, which was his costume from two years ago. As you can see, it still fits him perfectly. Babydoll went as a Bollywood star, of course. Heh heh. Completely un-Halloweeny. I've got to get them good and proper scary and spooky costumes next year.

We were in the first group of trick-or-treaters. There were many more groups after  us, even after the sun went down and the potluck dinner began. The adults got into the act as well, with many of them dressing to fit the occasion. Some even dressed their dogs up! Some who lived a little further away, drove their fully-spooked up cars to the party. It was absolutely fabulous.

Babydoll was a little scared at first, when she saw all the monsters, zombies, and other bloody creatures. I had to carry her into the first few houses - she was brave enough then to go up to the scary host to take (just one piece of) candy, haha. She was all right after a while, after seeing how much fun everyone was having and how harmless all the scary people were. Ryan had the time of his life, following the crowd and collecting as much candy as he liked. He wasn't scared at all, even as he noted which houses were spookier than the rest.

It was a fantastic evening!

It kinda seems like it has been all about Ryan this week on the blog so I'm sending you off into the weekend with some of Richard's phone photos of Ryan (which were taken in May). Rest assured, babydoll had plenty of adventures this week, both on her own and with Ryan. In fact, yesterday evening we brought both of them to a charity carnival at Ryan's preschool and babydoll had an absolute blast. From participating expertly in the arts and crafts activity to running around on the football pitch with boys more than twice her age and size, she was in her element. There'll be more of her next week on the blog, I promise!

Have a great weekend!

Catwalk cameo

I was invited to Noel Caleb's first month anniversary of the opening of their new concept store at Orchard Central today. Ryan accompanied me. We were early - had time to look around the store and watch the first segment of their runway show.

The store carries ten labels, encompassing women and children's wear, jewellery and bags/purses. We bought this green checked shirt with tabbed sleeves and a grey hoodie for around $50 from Curiosity, an Australian label. Ryan loves hoodies, plus his favourite colour is green, so this was right up his alley.

Adding to the fun, Ryan got roped in to do a cameo on the runway, along with two other children. They were asked to walk with the models for the finale.

Here he was, front row at the show, waiting for his turn.

Doing a quick interview! The lady in the photo is Eileen Yap, the founder of Noel Caleb.

Post-runway photo!

If you're in the area, check out the store at Orchard Central, #02-24/25.

Updates on Ryan

Last month, we met up with Ryan's preschool teachers for a parent-teacher conference, to discuss his progress and things like that. He's doing great. The teachers said that he gets along with everyone; he's really easygoing and he is comfortable hanging out with anyone. He reads well, writes well. He likes to draw a lot. His Mandarin, including his Hanyu Pinyin, is good enough such that his Mandarin teacher assumed that we coached him at home (we don't).

In particular, the teachers mentioned a project in which Ryan took the lead. The children were discussing plans to make a charitable donation and they were deciding which charity to donate to. Ryan took the lead: helping to document and tally the votes, writing a letter to the school office to inform the office of the final choice, leading a group of classmates to the office to deliver the letter and explain its message and even using a camera to take photos of the whole thing. I thought that was quite impressive.

Ryan is doing golf as an extra-curricular school activity; something which I think he has a love-hate relationship with. According to the instructors, he is quite good, and when I talk to him about golf, he's happy and enthusiastic. On the other hand, whenever I remind him that he has a lesson, he will tell me that he doesn't want to go (too late though as I'd already paid for the term). I know that he enjoys himself during the lesson (I sit and watch him from the sidelines) so I was a little perplexed at his reluctance. Recently, I realised the reason - the golf lesson is conducted under the hot sun and I know that he really doesn't like being in the sun. When he actually goes for the lesson, he always has a good time and forgets about the heat, but when he's at home and we dissect it, he definitely remembers the discomfort!

Ryan is still taking swimming lessons once a week. Apart from golf and swimming, he doesn't do any classes. I have a feeling we won't do golf next term though! Haha!

Ryan's modelling/acting life is pretty busy. He had a casting call on Friday, followed by an audition on Monday (yesterday) and he has another casting call later this week. Keeping our fingers crossed that he'll be selected for one or more of the roles.

These photos were taken last Sunday at the beach near Parkland Green. We'd finished our meal and Ryan and I ventured out for a walk, while Richard minded babydoll who had fallen asleep. Ryan headed straight for the beach. I was surprised because I thought he wanted to ride his scooter along the path. What surprised me even more was how at ease he was with the sand and the surf, even taking off his shoes unprompted. When he was much younger, he was not a fan of the beach at all - he hated having sand between his toes and he was very uneasy with the surf. Now, he's a pro. I told Richard that it must be because of all the training he got when we went to Bali and to Mauritius!

Ok, that's all!
