Almost a model

Ryan's talent agency contacted me today to ask if I have a daughter called Rachel. I replied, yes, and the agency was so surprised because they did not know. Apparently, a production house called Ryan's talent agency and specifically asked for Rachel. They'd spotted Rachel when Ryan went for an audition at their studio (and Rachel tagged along). That was back in October! I'm so surprised that they remembered little Rachel!

Anyway, the production house was casting for a print ad so they asked our talent agency if they could see Rachel. So I fetched her from her nanny and made our way there but, before we could get there, I received the message that the client already selected a model for their shoot tomorrow. What an anti-climax!

Oh well, better luck next time. Rachel wasn't bothered at all. She napped the whole time. I, on the other hand, was quite disappointed because I had skipped my lunch and spent a few hours driving up and down. I think Richard was quite disappointed too (he was trying to make arrangements to join us at the audition).

So that the whole thing wasn't a total waste of time, here's a photo that I snapped of our little babydoll just before I sent her back to the nanny. Looking at this makes everything all right. Ahh...

Ryan's commercial for Super!

Here's Ryan's latest commercial! He is at 0:43-0:44 and 1:09-1:11 of the video!

This was the one that Ryan shot at Sentosa last month. Huge thanks again to everyone on set - from the crew at Veer Motion Graphics to Ryan's co-stars (Ashraff and Teresa). The commercial is really cute and sweet! I think it is not airing on TV at the moment, only on the internet, although it will be in circulation on the internet for quite some time (2 years). The company has a separate commercial on TV at the moment. Still they may also choose to crop parts of this commercial to make a shorter one for airing on TV, so let's hope they do and that Ryan's scene makes the cut!

Ryan had two auditions last week so we are crossing our fingers that he will get booked for more work!

Rachel's first lesson at Heguru

Rachel attended her first Heguru class last weekend at Heguru Education Centre at Eunos.

To be honest, I had intended to start her on Shichida classes when she is much older. As long-time readers of this blog know, we have been a Shichida family since 2009, when we signed Ryan up for Shichida classes. I did a lot of reading and research on whole-brain training back then and the schools with the best reviews were Shichida and Heguru. Heguru did not have any schools in Singapore back in 2009, so Shichida it was. I do give credit to Shichida - Ryan enjoys his classes very much and I do see results.

Nevertheless, a part of me still wondered about Heguru. So when Heguru announced that they were setting up shop in Singapore starting January 2013, enrolling Rachel in Heguru was the perfect opportunity to find out more about it. So there we were on Saturday, in the good company of Teacher Paige and Assistant Teacher Marilyn.

There are three Heguru centres in Singapore now. Each centre is separately run, however. I signed up with the Eunos centre after checking out the teachers at all the three centres. I believe that the quality of the teachers is a major differentiating factor so I based my choice on that.

Although the Eunos centre is also the centre closest to home, proximity to home was not a consideration because we are not usually in the east on weekends. We are usually driving Ryan to his classes and all of Ryan's classes are not in the east.

Having attended the class, I do think that there are a few differences between Shichida and Heguru in terms of how the class is conducted, at least for Rachel's level. There are also a few differences in terms of the activities that are carried out in class. Nevertheless, the hallmarks of right-brain training are present - memory games, high-speed flashcards, intuition games and visualisation games.

Rachel was very active during the class, as she always is. She certainly did not sit down tamely on her little cushion for the whole one hour. Nevertheless, she didn't fall asleep - haha! She was constantly alert and constantly stimulated. That's what I concluded because she was completely spent after the class and immediately fell asleep when I strapped her into her car seat. She took a solid nap while I picked the boys up and she continued to sleep through our lunch!

Having practised Shichida for more than 3 years, there are a few things about Heguru that I need to adjust to. I still have the option of switching Rachel to Shichida if I decide I prefer Shichida for her but that decision can only be made after we have attended classes for a while. Who knows, maybe I'll end up switching Ryan to Heguru? I'm just keeping an open mind at the moment and so far, so good.

If you are curious about Heguru, the centre at Eunos is holding information sessions for parents this Saturday and next Saturday (12 and 19 January 2013) from 4:30 to 5:30 pm. Click here to register.

Ryan's swimming

Here's a Youtube video of Ryan at his swimming class last Sunday. It's about 6 minutes and 40 seconds long.

Over the past few months we have been making a greater effort to make sure that we get him to class (unless we are travelling) so he has been making steady progress lately.

Rachel's food adventures

Look at the way her eyes lit up! That's some cherry tomatoes and some rocket on Christmas Day. Next, she had some chicken...

... and carrot slices for snacking.

Spaghetti!

More carrots and rocket, plus some big tomatoes.

Steamed carrot sticks.

At a Vietnamese restaurant in KL with Terri and Vincent. Enjoying a salad of raw vegetables - bean sprouts, tomatoes, cucumber and water cress.

Sweet potato sticks!

Steamed long beans.

Steamed broccoli!

She's also had some boiled potatoes, cantaloupe, cabbage, lettuce, bread, toast. And yes, we have offered her stuff like rice cereal, Farley's Rusks, plus a jar of mixed vegetable puree. Not much actually goes into her tummy at the moment though, so she is still on a full diet of breast milk. She has been enthusiastic about trying new stuff and is generally quite happy to sit down at the dining table with us and play with her food.

New Year's Day in KL

A quick post to update on our trip to KL over New Year's Day. We drove up on Friday night and stayed till Tuesday night. I didn't take many photos this time - all the photos here were snapped with my phone or with Margaret's phone.

We met up with Terri and Vincent a few times. It's always a pleasure. Here's Terri with Rachel while we were at Tropicana City Mall. Rachel looks so girly here!

There was mahjong as always and Rachel was intrigued enough to sit with Richard while he slaughtered everyone at the table.

The main purpose of the trip was for Ryan to spend time with his cousins and he really did spend a lot of time with them. We dropped him off everyday at Margaret's house, which Ryan calls "the big house". The family was so pleased with Ryan this trip because he finally deigned to greet everyone - ye ye, ma ma, ku ma, etc. Here he is having lunch with his cousins (without us).

Ryan did spend a lot of time playing on the ipad/computer games/etc with his cousins but those moments are not the photo-worthy ones. Here're some of the more memorable activities - Ryan baked some bread with his cousin, Jerica, helping her to measure out the ingredients and knead the dough.

He also helped Jerica to make some rainbow cookies!

Showing off his rainbow cookies to Richard and me!

While we did spend a lot of time with the family, having most of our meals with them, Richard and I also managed to squeeze in some shopping, mostly clothes for the two littles, and most importantly, we had a good rest. I picked up some antibiotics from the doctor before we left Singapore which, coupled with the good rest over the trip, pulled me back to good health, in time for the new year.

Happy Sunday

Thank you all so much for your messages/emails on my last post. Yes, I'm looking forward to 2013! Now that I have the mindset of clearing out the old, I'm really looking forward to the new. I'm excited to see what loveliness is going to come into my life now that I've made space for it.

We spent the weekend getting back into our routine of Ryan's classes. Rachel had a class too! I will post separately about that. I will also post separately about each of Ryan's classes so that I have a proper record of what's happening at the moment for him.

Babydoll Rachel is crawling well, with her tummy off the ground. Although she is still a beginner at crawling, she can get to her target pretty quickly, and given that she never seems to keep still, she needs a lot of active supervision.

Teething! Yes, you can't see the teeth yet, but if you put your finger on her gums, you can feel the little hard teeth. We'll see them any day now! She is still very cheerful, so hopefully she will coast through the teething with minimum discomfort. Ryan didn't have any problems with teething so hopefully that toughness runs in the family.

Rachel can recognise people now! She is still amenable to strangers but she does have a preference for me and gets very excited when I fetch her from her nanny in the evenings. Her vocabulary seems to be expanding, hahaha, I can make out different "words" which she repeats off and on. Richard is betting that she is going to be walking and talking very early and I think he's right!

Ryan had a fantastic weekend. His classes went well and he slept well. We were getting a little worried about his food intake because he had a few days of eating very little. He surprised us by walloping two bowls of rice on Friday evening and a similar amount on Saturday evening.

Ryan got his hair cut very short! He is due for his headshots soon so Richard took him to get his hair cut because this agency insists on short hair. I do not understand that at all. Everyone we know is so in love with his curls and says he looks so good with curls ... everyone except the people who are in the business of looking good. Oh well, the curls will grow back in time for Chinese New Year!

Our weekend had a surprise ending. Ryan and I went to the playground in the evening and we bumped into Alicia and her family there! Ryan was overjoyed to see his mate, Brayden! He had been asking for Brayden (and Rou Ern) very often the last few days so it must have been like a wish come true for him. The two boys played together at the playground till the sun went down and then they rode back to our place on their scooters.

It was really nice for Richard and I to spend some time with Chris and Alicia. Having adult company is always good for adults, hahaha! We had dinner (ordered in) and the boys continued playing on. Brayden didn't want to leave at the end of the night and bawled his eyes out. When Chris drove off from our place, it was Ryan's turn to burst into tears. Aww.

Ryan has an audition tomorrow so he won't be going to school. In fact, he hasn't been back to school yet for this year! He's not missing school - he has had lots of fun over the holidays and has had no time at all to be bored!

To pen off, here's another one of Ryan's bedtime stories:

"Once upon a time, there were three little pigs. The three little pigs climbed up the tree. The three little pigs sat on the box. The three little pigs drink the milk. Finished the milk. Ameena's Milk. Dropped the milk into the water. The three little pigs hold the umbrella. It's a rainy day. The three little pigs cleaned the soap and cleaned the towel. One pig took the green soap. One pig took the red soap and the last pig took the orange soap. Then they turned the faucet and finished the water. Rachel's bedtime with me. That's the end of the story. The End."

Hello 2013

Two nights ago, I had a terrible dream. I dreamt that I lost Ryan, my son. I was hunting high and low for him with this agonizing chill of fear in my chest and my throat, thinking that I'd never see him again. I woke in a fright, eyes wide in alarm, needing a little longer than usual to orientate myself, to assure myself that my son was safe in bed with me. I was wrapped around him and we were spooning in exactly the same position we were in when we fell asleep.

Richard has always told me that, in life, there are very few things that matter. Focus on those things. Everything else is just noise.

What my nightmare brought into sharp focus for me is that my family is what is essential to me. My little son, with his big round eyes and generous hugs. My darling daughter, with her ever-ready smile and her babbling sounds. My husband, with his laser-sharp wit and his bottomless well of patience.

It's not a surprise, of course. My family has always been my priority. Still, even though I am first and foremost a parent, I have always tried to make sure that the other areas of my life continue to be nourished. This year, I'm going to go easy on myself. Let a few things slide.

Hmm, perhaps this is not the most cheerful way to begin my first post of the year, but I think it's apt. I have a new mindset for 2013. Where previously it could be said that I was still treading the water between my pre-kids life and my family life, I am now firmly across the river. Anything that doesn't lead back to my family is going to sit very far down on my list of things that need attention.

In addition to identifying what is essential to me, 2012 also forced me to let go of what is no longer right for my life as it is now. I took a good, attentive look at what I held in my hand, acknowledged that what I held wasn't working anymore, and mustered the strength to let it go, keeping the faith that new happiness would eventually fill the void left behind.

In particular, friendships. Some childhood friendships which I'd thought would last forever, through thick and thin, instead withered quickly under the slightest test. It was painful for me. Until I realised that it wasn't painful for them and that they did not appreciate how painful it was for me. Those friendships were based solely on childhood memories, and these ladies were not interested in my adult life or even in getting to know the person I am now, kids included. With that understanding, it was easy for me to let go. We had grown apart.

Conversely, I discovered the strength of other friendships, some old and some not so old. I was surprised, pleasantly surprised, to find such goodwill coming from such unexpected sources. In addition, there were the ever-faithful friendships, the ones whom I thank God every day for, the ones who shine even brighter now that I'm not distracted by the lesser friendships. With my growing awareness of how rare a true friend is, I cherish these golden friendships ever more deeply and ever more gratefully, and consider myself extremely blessed.

I also made a lot of new friends in 2012, friends who share my (present) interests and lifestyle, and hopefully, friends who will grow with me from here on.

So 2012 was a year of pruning and fine-tuning my list of friends and, in truth, that exercise brought me a deep sense of calm and peace. You know what they say - one of the steps to achieving inner peace is to simplify and de-clutter. I guess that applies to the people in your life as well.

Simplifying and de-cluttering has been on my mind for the past couple of months now, especially in relation to our home. I have been trying to make small improvements, to get our little home organised and free of clutter. For example, we recently gave away our four dining chairs. Tiger was sleeping in them and leaving his hair all over the cushions. I had to spend hours brushing the hair out and if I didn't, Richard would have to use newspaper to cover the seat before sitting down. It was ridiculous to have four designer chairs just for our cat to sleep in, so one day I told Richard to get rid of the chairs. So we did. And I feel so happy about it.

I've still got a long way to go however, so this will be a continuing goal in 2013. I will get there. I will not be defeated by my own home.

The most significant event of 2012 was, without a doubt, the arrival of our darling babydoll, Rachel. With every passing day, she is earning her place in our family, stamping her mark on our hearts and charming everyone she meets. There are the usual comparisons with her brother but she is proving, everyday, that she is her own person, with her very own personality and character, her own opinions and views, needs and wants.

This year will be full of milestones for her, a very memorable year indeed, and we are looking forward to sharing and celebrating those precious moments. She is our ray of sunshine, pure and innocent, our little baby girl, and we have nothing but love, love and love for her.

Ryan turns four in a few weeks, a delightful age and an important stage. He is developing and progressing so beautifully, it really amazes me. For the past week, he has been going around the house calling himself "Little Mouse". Richard is "Papa Mouse" and I am "Mama Mouse". It's hilarious.

Last night, he told me a bedtime story. It went like this:

"Once upon a time there was a little spider. The spider climbed up the chocolate tree. The spider ate all the chocolate and fell down into the water. The spider took a submarine. The submarine is yellow. The spider climbed up the ladder. Incy Wincy Spider! No, Incy Wincy Spiesky! No, Incy Wincy Spies Again! Spider eat the Spiesky Spies! After that, the spider ate 100 chocolate trees. Then open the door and the spider come out with Papa. Spider play with Papa! And that's the end of the story. The End."

Oh, Ryan. You bring us joy every day, just by being you. We love you, love you, love you.

Ryan continues his various classes this year - violin, swimming, and Shichida. M asked why we chose violin instead of piano. Well, we haven't ruled out the piano actually (does that sound kiasu? haha). I started learning the piano when I was about four years old so I have nothing but love for it. I intend to introduce both instruments to Ryan eventually (plus a few more!). If he likes them both, good. If he doesn't like either of them, that's fine too. I did not want to introduce both the violin and the piano at the same time. I did some reading and research and found out that, generally speaking and for various reasons, children can start on the violin at an earlier age than they should be starting on the piano, so at 3 years old, violin it was. Still, at this stage, I consider it very much exploration and experimentation, instead of hardcore learning.

For Shichida, I mentioned previously that I expect things to step up dramatically this year. I've always felt that the activities for ages 0-3 were so easy that anyone and everyone could execute them so I'm hoping to see activities that are a lot more challenging for Ryan this year.

2013 is going to be a hard work year for Richard and me. Richard is taking on more and more responsibility at the office and, the more he proves himself capable for the task, the more responsibility he gets. On my end, I have to work extra hard to "make up" for the time I was away on maternity last year. I am still studying for a course which I started last year (it finishes in April 2013) and I do intend to continue indulging in my little creative pastimes - photography, sewing, blogging, cooking, etc. - plus who knows, I might even pick up some new skills this year.

So, goodbye 2012 and thank you. Thank you for clarity of purpose, strength of heart, and for bringing our babydoll to us.

And hello 2013. I've got a lot in store for you, so I hope you're ready.
